Loews Hotels win me over
When I stay at a smaller hotel chain I rarely sign up for the frequent guest program. The benefits are too remote to be worth the hassle. I am already enrolled in lots of other programs; how likely am I to stay 15 nights a year at this new chain in order to earn a free newspaper?
My first visit to a Loews Hotel was different, though. At check-in I learned that the Loews First program offers the newspaper, room upgrades, late check-out and a free welcome amenity from the very first stay. I signed up on the spot, and that evening found a huge bag of goodies sitting in my room. I had requested the "regional gift," and the Tastykakes and other items were a welcome Philadelphia treat.
It was the message, not the gift that won me over: Loews wanted to treat me well from the first stay, not after I had proven myself to them.

Yes, I'd agree that the Loews gift bag is adorable, cute and very nice in terms of service *before* the sale and as a "girly girl", I'm sure I'd actually appreciate the cuteness of it more than you. However, it's one of those things that just drives the cost of actually staying at a Lowes up, right? I mean, how much does it cost to prepare the bag, deliver the bag, let alone plan for it (endless executive discussions on what's pc to put in the bag, what reflects on the city best and which companies they don't want to snub as participants), buy the materials for it and ensure that you get the "right" bag that you requested? I'm guessing that little freebie bag added a good $25-$35 in overhead to your hotel stay, if not more.
Yes, that's spread out over lots of people, and ideally, you'll *always* stay at Loews because of their great service before the sale but we both know that's not very realistic in the day and age of expedia.com and priceline.com.
Which would you rather have? A gift bag in your room or somewhat lower rates, every single time you stay?
